Planning Board

Planning board and multi-selections

I. Planning Board Views

The planning board is the board that will allow you to manage your work items.
The board is composed of a center pane where all you work items for a particular backlog will be displayed and a column where all your backlog (Main Backlog, Release baklogs, Iteration backlogs ...) will be displayed as boxes. These boxes are grouped by master (see Organizing Backlogs) and sorted by release date.

II. Organizing Your Backlogs

With the Master setting in each backlog box, you can organize your backlogs in a n hierarchical way.
This is very useful and will help you have a global view on your backlogs and a more granular view on your sub-backlogs.
In the Agile world this will be the way to explode your releases into sprints.

  • Example:
    o Release 1
oo Sprint 1.1 (Master Release 1)
oo Sprint 1.2 (Master Release 1)
    o Release 2
oo Sprint 2.1 (Master Release 2)
    ...

When scheduling, your work items will then be updated to the desired backlog and all the master backlogs of this backlog.

  • Example:
If an work item is dropped into Sprint 1.2
The work item will then be associated to the backlogs: Release 1, Sprint 1.2

III. Releasing Your Backlogs

You can release your backlogs directly from the backlog boxes.
If some work items are unresolved, Urban Turtle will offer two options:
    1. Swap the main backlog work items to a the selected backlog
After selecting th destination backlog click on the button
    2. Ignore these work items and release anyways.

IV. Work Item Views

The work item in Urban Turtle can be shown in three different ways:

  • The SUMMARY view (default view)
  • The CARD view (always accessible by double click on any other views)
  • The LIST view

V. Work Item Scheduling

Managing your work items between backlogs has actually become a fun task in TFS with Urban Turtle.
By a simple drag and drop you can associate your work items to a backlog.

The planning board will display all your unreleased backlogs as droppable boxes.
Each of these boxes displays some information such as:

  1. Name
  2. Master - the parent backlog
  3. Release date
  4. # of work items by type
  5. # of unresolved / resolved work items

Dropping a card into the desired backlog box will automatically update the work item backlog. Your backlog information displayed in the boxes will be refreshed.

Since the multi-selection is enabled in the planning board (Alt + left click), to update your selected work items, just drag and drop them into the desired backlog box.

If you are updating a task containing tasks, Urban Turtle will automatically ask you if you wish to update the tasks as well. You will be able to choose the ones to update and the ones not to.
Note that the tasks in the same backlog of the parent will be selected automatically.

VI. Work Item Ordering

  • To start ordering
Simply select your Urban Turtle ranking field in the Sort by combo from your context menu

  • Drag an work item on another work item.
User will be able to move an work item card from it's current position to a new one. Just like moving real cards on a conference table during a sprint meeting. When an work item is moved, all other work items are automatically reorganized. You might find it a bit tricky to rank on a 2 dimensional board but you will get use to it pretty fast.

  • Moving a Card With tasks
When the user moves a card that has tasks, all its tasks are also moved as a block. A parent card can only be dropped on another parent card. A parent card can not be dropped on a tasks and, conversely, a tasks can not be dropped on another parent card.

The ranking is only applied to the work items that have at least one "UNRELEASED" backlog or are associated to the main backlog (Unscheduled)

    The Ranking is project wide.
